Ribfest organizers say they need about 600 volunteers

The Exchange Club of Naperville is seeking volunteers to work at this year’s Ribest, being held June 17-20 at the DuPage Event Center and Fairgrounds in Wheaton.

“We’re going to need about 1,800 volunteer spots to put on Ribfest this year, and right now we could use people to fill about 600 of those spots,” Dawn Schultz, head of Ribfest operations, said in a news release.

“We could use help selling concessions, supervising the Wintrust Community Banks Family Fun Area, monitoring gates, serving food, working the beer tents, and even helping supervise the parking areas,” she said.

Volunteers can sign up by going to www.ribfest.net/contact/volunteer

Naperville students help make dolostone the state rock

Dolostone will become Illinois’ official state rock thanks, in part, to an effort by Naperville students.

Legislation submitted by state Sen. Laura Ellman and state Rep. Janet Yang Rohr, both Naperville Democrats, was signed into law Monday.

House Bill 4261 was proposed by students from Maplebrook Elementary School in Naperville and Pleasant Dale School in Burr Ridge, who discovered Illinois did not have a state rock, a news release said.

The students interviewed regional geology scholars, visited museums and conducted research to create a ballot with three choices, which schools across the state voted on and ultimately chose dolostone as the winner.

“Students played a large part in the designation of our state tree and flower over a century ago, and once again they will play a large part in our state’s history through their work in designating Dolostone as the state rock,” Ellman said in the release.

Dolostone is a sedimentary rock that underlies nearly all of Illinois, with the exception of the northernmost part of the state, the release said. It helps enrich soil by providing valuable nutrients for plant growth, and caused a major mineral rush in Galena in the early 1800s.

Dolostone will officially become the state rock of Illinois on Jan. 1, 2023.
