Grant helps Palos students help bees

Fourth graders in Caitie Sekema’s class at Palos East Elementary School are doing their part to help boost bee populations.
The class recently received a grant from the Planet Bee Foundation, which included material for her students to create seed balls. Seed balls are natural clay balls, full of seeds and soil which are dispersed to grow plants that attract bees to pollinate them.
“In the grant application I told the Planet Bee Foundation that my class was studying a unit on bees where we read about honeybees, wrote poetry, and made a beehive of nonfiction facts about them,” Sekema said.
The grant included enough seeds, clay, and potting soil to create 900 seed balls, enough to produce about 9,000 flowers and plants, which were recently planted in the school’s courtyard.

Orland Park among ‘Best Places to Live’
Orland Park has been named one of Chicago Magazine’s Best Places to Live in the June/July 2022 edition of the publication.
“This is a wonderful honor for Orland Park,” said Mayor Keith Pekau. “The village’s natural open spaces, our proximity to downtown Chicago, great schools and a thriving real estate market were all important parts of Orland Park being named.”
“With over 650 acres of parkland, this village lives up to its name,” writer Carissa Crawford Chappell wrote in the magazine feature, noting not only the village’s own parks and trails but the ease of access to the Cook County Forest Preserve system from both the north and south ends of town. “This town of nearly 60,000 appeals to young families and empty nesters alike,” the story stated.
