Elmhurst families have two opportunities this Sunday (May 22) to bike with members of the city’s police and fire departments.

Both of the two-mile rides will begin and end at Wild Meadows Trace near the city’s Safety Town, where members of the city’s bike safety team will offer bike safety tips, bike safety checks and help with fitting helmets. Ride times are 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. or 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Bike Ride and Safety Day is free, but advance registration is required by going to Form Center * City of Elmhurst * CivicEngage or by visiting the city website and searching for Bike Ride and Safety Day.

The emphasis will be on safety and fun. Activities will center around Wild Meadows Trace, 511 S. York St., just north of the Prairie Path and east of York St. near the old depot and near Safety Town.

In an email to Pioneer Press, Elmhurst Police Sgt. Brendan Bruckner, who supervises the bike program for the department, talked about the Sunday event.

“Officers from the Elmhurst Police Department are looking forward to the “Bike Ride & Safety Day” this Sunday,” Bruckner said. “We consider it an important part of our mission to work with adults, teens, and kids to develop good and safe bicycle riding habits. With the start of the bike riding season, we hope our efforts at the Police Department, Fire Department, and other City Departments, help facilitate a safe and fun bike riding season for all.”

The route for the rides will be west along the Prairie Path to Rex Boulevard and then back to the start. In addition to the ride, there will be giveaways, ice cream and a raffle chance to win a bike and helmet.
