Speak Out is a reader-generated column of opinions. If you there’s something you’d like to comment on in Elgin or beyond, send an email to [email protected]. Please include “speak out” in the subject line.

Makes sense: My grandfather, who was born 1880 was a farmer with a lot of common sense. When asked how old he was, he would give his last birthday and then add nine months to be accurate.

Longing for the past: It seems like everything that was once popular is finding new life, including revivals of old sitcoms, favorite Broadway musicals and movie classics. Has partisan politics and a worldwide health crisis left everyone wishing for a lot more than what we’re currently experiencing in our remote living? Would it really be all that surprising if a return to the past will naturally precede a more popular future?

Classic Trump: Every time a former employee of President Trump disagrees with him in public, all of a sudden they’re no good. The latest no-good employee is secretary of defense under the Trump administration, Mark Esper. He had the nerve to criticize Trump on “60 Minutes.” But wait, wasn’t he vetted and approved for the job? I can’t wait until he starts throwing his ex-wives under the bus. Ivana, maybe not because of the kids. Marla Maples for sure, since he never sees his daughter anyway. And eventually Melania, once that’s over. What a class individual.

Killing the middle class: Gasoline prices have gone anywhere but down. Nicor sent has sent out notifications, i.e., warnings, that our therm charges in May will increase over 60%. ComEd, not to be outdone, has been granted a rate hike and has filed for another. And grocery store prices? Well, anyone who eats knows that story. If this continues, the socioeconomic status of middle class with cease to exist.

Open your minds: Day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, a majority of contributors to Speak Out seem to be very biased in their beliefs and opinions. Makes me wonder if any of these people ever think about opening up their minds to consider a different perspective. If they did, I have no doubts that our country and world would be a much happier, respectful place to be. Choices.

Give me a break: Suggesting that Justice Alito leaked the draft on abortion is the most ridiculous, outrageous thing I’ve ever seen in Speak Out.
