Freedom of speech means all opinions, not just yours

I found the Sunday, May 1, 2022, Naperville Sun most interesting. First, a front page article, “Culture wars boil over two seats,” outlining the fact that various organizations and people are trying to make sure two seemingly qualified individuals — Shannon Adcock and Kevin Coyne — are not appointed to certain Naperville advisory boards because their opinions do not agree with those in opposition.

Really? Do we live in a democracy where the First Amendment protects freedom of speech? Last time I checked, we do.

Next a couple of letters to the editor, “City commissions must reflect diversity, inclusion” and “Adcock should not be appointed to any commission,” again opposing the proposed appointments.

Really? Same story here. We live in a country where freedom of speech is protected. How else can you get civil discourse regarding important issues? The bottom line is if you want inclusion, you simply can’t reject someone whose opinion you do not agree with. Quite hypocritical.
