A Frankfort man is in custody after turning himself in Monday following a Thursday night reckless driving complaint and police chase in downtown Mokena.

Mokena interim police Chief Brian Benton said James Hurley, 55, turned himself in to police late Monday afternoon after he was contacted by police to surrender or have a warrant placed for his arrest. He was charged with aggravated fleeing/attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving, improper overtaking and disobeying a traffic control device.

“The subject drove erratically around Front Street in and out of the Metra Lot, driving over the curb, then blew the light at Front Street and Wolf Road,” Benton said. “The short pursuit went down Front Street toward Francis Road and then was terminated.”

Benton said Hurley was ticketed earlier Thursday for leaving the scene of a property damage incident. He left in the same Audi Q5 that police saw driving recklessly that evening in the 11000 block of Front Street, police said. Police were able to identify and contact Hurley based on that vehicle.

Police said they tried to stop Hurley after recognizing the Audi when he gave chase. Due to safety, police suspended the pursuit.

“Officers may not pursue when the identity of the driver is known and the swift apprehension of the driver is outweighed by the risks associated with continuing efforts to apprehend the driver,” police said in a statement Friday.
