Buttermilk restaurant in Naperville is expected to be closed through at least Wednesday following a kitchen fire Monday night, a manager said.

Naperville firefighters were called to the 1715 Freedom Drive business about 6:50 p.m. and arrived to find black smoke coming from the roof vent, according to a fire department news release.

After forcing their way into the closed restaurant, firefighters found the blaze limited to the kitchen and being “kept in check” by a sprinkler system, the release said. It was extinguished by about 7:25 p.m.

The fire started in the restaurant’s kitchen, but the exact source is under investigation, the release said. Damage was estimated to be about $25,000, and the restaurant deemed uninhabitable by the city’s Transportation, Engineering, and Development department.

Blanca Stoeger, one of the restaurant’s managers, declined to speculate Tuesday on what might have started the blaze. It was hoped they’d be able to reopen later this week, she said.

Buttermilk opened in the Freedom Commons, near Diehl and Naperville roads in January 2018. It specializes in breakfast and lunch, with hours of 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily.
