ECC b-ball player named Second Team All-American
Elgin Community College basketball player Jordan Wilkins has been named a Second Team All American by the National Junior College Athletic Association for his performance during the 2021-22 season.
Wilkins, a guard, averaged 19.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists and two steals per game. He will play for NCAA Division II Winona State University in the fall.
Wilkins is the fourth men’s basketball player to be named All-America since head coach Reed Nosbisch took over the ECC program in 2007. Previous selections were Brett Rau (2015-16), Homer Denson (2016-17) and Kelvin Cortez-Harvey (2019-20).
State Rep. Moeller collecting kids’ books
State Rep. Ana Moeller, D-Elgin, is collecting new or gently used children’s books throughout April at five area locations to benefit nonprofit agencies as part of National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April.

Paper shredding being held in Carpentersville
A community shred event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 9, outside state Rep. Suzanne Ness’s office at 20 S. Grove St., Carpentersville.
Co-sponsored by AMS Store & Shred, the event is first-come first-served basis, and attendees are limited to two banker boxes per household. The event could end early if the truck is filled before 1 p.m., organizers said.
Paper clips, staples, Post-It notes and similar items do not need to be removed. Items that won’t be accepted include binder clips, binders, trash, CD/DVDs, metal objects and plastic.

Borden library holding Earth Month programs
The Gail Borden Public Library District is holding three programs for Earth Month in April.
Recycling for the Whole Family with Elgin Area Leadership Academy is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 2, at the Main Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.
This bilingual event will feature recycling activities, crafts and a tour of a recycling truck.
Grow Your Own Groceries: In Containers! to take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, inside the Main Library.
Master gardeners Ron and Linda Stork will demonstrate how to grow vegetables and other food in a limited amount of space with easy-to-use containers.
An Earth Day Preschool Storytime will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Rakow Branch, 2751 W. Bowes Road, Elgin.

Township offering free fecal occult blood test kits
The Hanover Township Office of Community Health is offering free fecal occult blood test kits to residents.
Kits can be picked up anytime between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Hanover Township Senior Center, 240 S. Route 59, Bartlett.
Mailing instructions will be provided for returning the tests. They should not be returned to the township.

4-H STEM Spectacular being held at Kane fairgrounds
Registration is underway for the 4-H STEM Spectacular from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, in Robinson Hall at the Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.
Youths ages 8 to 18 will participate in teams of two to complete activities like building and testing solar-powered cars and constructing and testing paper roller coasters or bridges.
Participants do not have to be members of a 4-H club. Throughout the event, youth can visit the 2022 4-H Ag Innovator Experience to explore technologies, tools and methods used by farmers to sustainably feed the world.
Information on the 4-H programs in DuPage, Kane and Kendall counties also will be available.
