A pet cat was killed Tuesday morning in a fire that caused more than $250,000 in damage to a home in the 900 block of Scott Drive, an Elgin Fire Department report said.

Firefighters arrived shortly after 11 a.m. to find flames coming from the roof of the single-story house and its attached garage engulfed, the report said. It took about 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

The home’s residents were able to escape but firefighters had to rescue a pet dog. A family cat could not be saved and died in the fire, the report said.

No injuries were reported. The home is uninhabitable, and the cause of the fire under investigation, officials said.
