A Carpentersville man who skipped bail by failing to attend the second day of his bench trial has been found guilty of child sex assault charges.
Hugo Contreras, 40, of the 100 block of Mora Road, was convicted by Kane County Judge David Kliment of two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, three counts of criminal sexual assault, five counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, two counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer and one count of resisting/obstructing a peace officer.
All but the last charge are felonies.

Prosecutors said the counts stem from incidents that occurred between 2012 and 2018, with the two victims being under the age of 13 when the assaults began.
Authorities learned of the situation when the older victim told a school counselor, a Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office news release said. When police came to Contreras’ house to arrest him, two officers received minor injuries when he fought with them.
Contreras was released on $25,000 bond in April 2018 and attended the first day of his trial on March 21, the release said. When he didn’t appear the following day, Kliment issued a warrant for his arrest.
“The victims in this case bravely faced their abuser in court and testified about the habitual abuse he perpetrated on them,” Assistant State’s Attorney Tyler Cox said in the release. “After the victims testified, the defendant made the cowardly choice of not appearing in court for the second day of the bench trial.”
Anyone with information on Contreras’ whereabouts is asked to call 911 or the Kane County Sheriff’s Office at 630-232-8400.
Contreras’ next scheduled court appearance is May 27. He faces up to 27 years in prison when sentenced.
