Service on multiple CTA train lines on the North Side was being restored Thursday afternoon after a rail control signal fell onto the tracks near the Belmont station, causing the evacuation of two trains, officials said.
Paramedics checked out several customers, but nobody was injured, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford, who said they responded at 6:42 a.m. to 945 W. Belmont Ave. in the city’s Lakeview neighborhood, when two trains were halted and “trapped” after power was shut down when the rail signal fell.
Fire crews evacuated both trains and walked everyone off and back into the Belmont Station without incident.

“We were just making sure everyone was OK,” Langford said. “Sometimes people get stressed out.”
Fire crews left the scene shortly before 9 a.m.
As of noon, trains were back on the move but major delays were still happening along the Red Line while significant delays and congestion were still reported on the Brown and Green lines, according to the CTA’s website.
Earlier, Purple Line trains were also affected.
