The Lyons Township High School District 205 board of education has hired Daniel Buys, Ed.D. as the new Global Studies Division Chair for the 2022-23 school year, replacing retiring Paul Houston.
According to a news release, Buys has served the past four years as an assistant principal at Morgan Park High School in Chicago, where he has led the work of the Instructional Leadership Team as it has increased the level of cognitive demand in instruction. Previously, he served one year as a social studies teacher and postsecondary coach at Solorio Academy High School, also in Chicago, the release said.
During his tenure at Solorio he led a Postsecondary Leadership Team to make college enrollment a schoolwide priority, developed a curriculum for junior and senior seminar classes and built partnerships with various postsecondary institutions that expanded opportunities for Solorio students. Also, while at Solorio, he established boys and girls cross country and track & field teams, and coached more than 50 All-Sectional honorees, 20 state qualifiers and two team Regional Champions, according to the release.

“I applied for the Global Studies Division Chair position because it allows me to support classroom teachers and ultimately students through strategic, collaborative and innovative curriculum and instruction,” Buys said in the release. “I am so excited for the opportunity to work at LTHS because I will be joining one of the best high schools in the state. More importantly, LTHS is committed to supporting every single student, something that is paramount to me as an educator.”

According to the release, Buys is a firm believer that good leaders do not happen by chance. Instead, excellent administrators happen due to significant and intentional work.
“As much as a leader needs to be sincere, committed, collaborative and empowering, above all else, an excellent administrator needs to be grounded to the value of improving outcomes for any and all students who walk into their building,” Buys said.
Buys earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Science from North Central College, a master’s degree in Urban Education from National Louis University and a doctorate in Education Leadership from the University of Illinois, Chicago. He has also accumulated 16 hours of graduate study in Instructional Leadership beyond his doctoral degree.
