I-55, Tri-State construction projects set

A patching and resurfacing project on northbound and southbound Interstate 55 from Weber Road to Interstate 80 in Will County started this week and will require overnight lane closures. Major travel delays are anticipated, the Illinois Department of Transportation said, and alternative routes are encouraged.

They said motorists should expect various overnight lane and partial ramp closures on both sides of I-55 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays, from 9 p.m. Fridays to 11 a.m. Saturdays and from 8 p.m. Saturdays to 11 a.m. Sundays. At least one lane in each direction will remain open. The project is expected to be completed in November.

Another project along the Tri-State Tollway between I-55 and 95th Street, includes continued reconstruction and widening of the roadway to five lanes in both directions, according to an Illinois Tollway news release.

Overnight lane closures on southbound I-294 are planned between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane at times, and once the complete, southbound traffic will be reduced to three lanes. Northbound I-294 will be reduced to three lanes with traffic shifts beginning in early April. The ramp connecting eastbound Archer Avenue to southbound I-294 will remain closed through the summer.

Motorists can expect delays, the agencies said.
