An Elmhurst 7-Eleven convenience store just east of the city’s police station was robbed at gunpoint early Wednesday morning by three teenage Black males who entered the store at 2:19 a.m., showed a gun to the clerk and fled with cigarettes and cash in a stolen car.

The three left the scene at 155 E. First St. in a stolen maroon Honda CR-V before police arrived, but the stolen vehicle triggered an alert on the city’s license plate reader system which let officers know the vehicle was on the south side of town.

An Elmhurst officer spotted the vehicle on Spring Road and units intercepted with a pursuit that continued eastbound on I-290 toward Chicago.

Elmhurst police, assisted by officers from the Illinois State Police and Chicago Police Department, pursued the offenders to the 4700 block of West Jackson Street in Chicago, where the suspects ran into an apartment building. Police surrounded the building. The offenders eventually jumped from a 3rd floor window. Following a foot chase, they were able to escape.

The stolen vehicle is in the custody of Elmhurst police. Evidence was recovered at the scene and the incident remains under active investigation.

Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth told Pioneer Press Wednesday that his detectives are also investigating what he called “a similar incident” in Chicago with similarly described suspects as the Elmhurst incident.

No injuries were reported.
