The Glencoe Public Works Department recently completed one project intended to improving the village’s infrastructure, with a second underway.
On March 7, rehabilitation of sanitary sewer lines was completed. Meanwhile, the village’s annual water main valve turning effort has started.
For the sanitary sewer lining, the work involved inserting a synthetic liner inside existing sewer mains with a goal of repairing aging pipe without having to do a large-scale excavation and replacement, according to village officials.
Public Works Director David Mau described the project as a capital improvement part of an ongoing Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Infiltration/Inflow Control effort.
“(This) program is geared at identifying and eliminating sources of inflow and infiltration (rainwater) from the sanitary sewer system,” said Mau. “Sanitary sewer lining, sanitary manhole rehabilitation and point repairs are the typical rehabilitation strategies to address (infiltration/inflow) issues.”
Mau said crews worked at eight separate locations in the village, with the work finished earlier this week.
He said the Village Board is set to award a contract at the March 17 board meeting for manhole rehabilitation work, which is another repair technique aimed at addressing infiltration and inflow issues.
The water valve initiative is a safeguard that the distribution system’s valves are working correctly in case of a water main break potentially leading to a water shutdown, Mau explained.
“It is performed in-house and is important to help root out any potentially problematic valves outside of an emergency event,” Mau said. “For the same reasons, we perform fire hydrant flushing every spring to operate every fire hydrant in the village to confirm they are in working condition.”
If residents notice discolored tap water, they are advised to run cold water to clear up any discoloration, he said.
Mau said the water valve-turning would run approximately for the next three months.
