The 25th annual Elmhurst St. Patrick’s Day Parade stepped off Saturday (March 5) in sunny warm weather that brought large crowds out to line both sides of Spring Road for blocks as dozens of parade entries passed by.
“The weather was incredible,” said Jim O’Connor, the parade’s longtime chair. O’Connor said he doesn’t get involved in estimating crowd sizes but agreed the Spring Road sidewalks seemed especially full this year.

He also agreed that this year’s parade drew more spectators than the previous parade in 2020. The 2021 parade was canceled due to pandemic concerns.
“The weather,” O’Connor said, “and because people are looking for an excuse to go out.”
Over 100 entries, including pipe and drum bands, the York High School marching band, politicians, businesses and community groups stretched the parade out to about two hours.
Two hours of music, marchers and kids along the sidelines scrambling for the candy some of parade participants passed or tossed as they marched past spectators, many, including some dogs, wearing Irish buttons, gear or complete costumes.
And all without a hitch, according to O’Connor, who said, “it’s easy when things go great.”
