Some “pretty potent” thunderstorms came through on Saturday evening, according to meteorologists.

Shortly before midnight, thunderstorms ripped through the Rockford area, into the Chicago area and then exited northwest Indiana, according to Zachary Yack, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

There were some reports of hail and high winds along with the thunderstorms. Wind gusts at 56 mph were recorded at Rockford Airport, 50 mph at O’Hare, and 50 mph at Midway. The Aurora area saw 72 mph wind gusts along with hail.

Although there was a warning for gusty winds for the earlier part of Sunday afternoon, the winds will diminish into the evening hours and will back out by this evening.

“This will transition into a wintry mix,” Yack said. “We are looking at chances of a mix of rain and snow and then eventually all snow when temperatures get cold enough later tonight and into tomorrow morning.”

Temperatures will be dipping to around 30 degrees, and possibly the upper 20s, according to Yack.

“It looks like 2 to 4 inches of snow will land along I-80 along the Illinois-Wisconsin state line, and 1 to 3 inches right around the Chicago metro area,” Yack said.

The snow will taper off on Monday afternoon, and there will be mostly overcast skies, according to Yack.

But brighter days are ahead.

“Tuesday we will get sunny skies and bounce back into the 30s and the rest of the week will be mostly dry and quiet,” Yack said.
