Iqra Mehreen, 33, of the 8300 block of Kedvale Avenue in Skokie, was charged with three counts of attempted first degree murder following the Feb. 21 incident in her home, said a statement issued by the Skokie Police public information officer.
The statement said that shortly after 9 a.m. on Feb. 21, Skokie police responded to a 911 call at Mehreen’s home. Officers spoke with Mehreen, who told them that because of a domestic issue with her husband, she sprayed lighter fluid on herself and her three children ages 9, 7 and 2, then grabbed a lighter and threatened to harm herself and the children.
The lighter was removed from Mehreen’s possession before officers arrived, police said. They said the children were taken to a hospital as a precaution due to the exposure of a flammable substance and that the Department of Children and Family Services was notified.
Mehreen was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for evaluation, said police. She is being held on a $500,000 bond and is scheduled for a March 2 hearing at the Skokie courthouse.
