Flossmoor student’s art lauded by Lincoln Presidential Library

Daleia Muhammad-Walker, 11, of Flossmoor was one of four student in the state to win the annual art contest sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and the Illinois State Board of Education.

She won in the category for grades 3-5.

The theme of the contest was “Survival Through Self-Expression,” and Muhammad-Walker’s artwork celebrated “the simple joys of love and kindness and the beauty of nature” and captured “art’s power to inject color into a lonely world or penetrate the masks people so often wear,” according to a news release from the state announcing the winners.

“Nature is the reason why I survive. Nature is what keeps me pushing. That’s why I choose my drawing,” Muhamad-Walker said in the release.

Other winners were from Skokie, Lincolnshire and Westchester. Their artworks will be on display at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield.
