player ready...Several Lake Zurich residents turned out on a recent Wednesday morning to have “Coffee with the Mayor” at a local restaurant, and for about an hour, they were able to pose questions and voice their concerns to the village leader.
One of the main issues discussed during the informal session Feb. 16 at Koffee Kup, on Main Street, was management of stormwater. Since 2015, flooding has been a consistent issue among town residents, and effectively addressing what to do with stormwater was highlighted as a priority.
Another prominent topic of discussion was replacing the water and sewer mains in the downtown area, as they are nearly 80 years old and in need of repair.
During the meeting, Mayor Tom Poynton described the approximately $6 million infrastructure repair project as “fundamental to growing the downtown area” and said he is committed to ensuring that the project is completed in the coming years.
The town’s Main Street was also discussed, as more and more businesses in that area are pivoting to online sales.
Still, though, two new restaurants are expected to open in the Main Street area in the near future, officials explained. One will be Vault 232, which was renovated from an old bank building. According to the village website, it is expected to feature both a drive-thru and outdoor patio space.
Poynton described it as a “high end, banquet-type establishment” and stated that it will likely open within the next month.
The other restaurant mentioned was Blue Ridge, a Korean barbecue establishment moving to Lake Zurich from Park Ridge. The new development is still in progress due to what officials called a material and contractor shortage as a result of the pandemic.
Poynton also pointed out that a wealth of information regarding current events in Lake Zurich is available on the “Benchmarks Newsletter Archive” section of the village website. He strongly recommended that residents regularly check it as a means of staying up to date on the latest town news.
The “Coffee with the Mayor” event is scheduled for the third Wednesday of the month, according to a village announcement about it. It’s billed as a “perfect opportunity to bring any concerns, ideas, or just pleasant conversation to Mayor Poynton.”
