A plan to expand Glenbrook Hospital’s cardiovascular facilities passed initial consideration by Glenview trustees Feb. 15.

Construction on the new facility is slated to begin later this year, according to a news release from NorthShore Health System, and will build out from the southern end of the existing structure, including a redesign of the hospital’s main entrance. Glenview Hospital will continue to maintain its other operations as a general hospital, while emergency cardiovascular procedures will continue at Evanston and Highland Park hospitals.

According to hospital president Jesse Peterson Hall, the expansion will provide cardiac and vascular surgery as well as the “most complicated” cardiac catheterization procedures done in the NorthShore University Health System.

The first phase of the plan will add 165,000 square feet of ground floor space, including 19 operating rooms, 38 recovery bays, 39,500 feet of clinical space as well as general office space; a subsequent expansion would add three additional floors above the new space and another 72 hospital beds for inpatient care.

Phase one will also include the construction of a parking lot on the eastern edge of the facility to accommodate for lost parking space that will be occupied by the new facilities.

Trustee Tim Doron inquired how parking as well as transit in and out of the facility on Pfingsten Road would be affected, particularly with the shared use of the road by both the hospital and Glenbrook South High School students. He requested staff examine how traffic could be modified in the area to accommodate for an increase in congestion in the area around the hospital and school.

Village President Michael Jenny thanked Hall for the expansion and the continued improvement of health services in Glenview.

“It’s a jewel of the community,” Jenny said. “We’re honored you’re investing so much into keeping it a state-of-the-art facility.”
