Palos Heights student steals show in ethical hacking course

Meghan Lennon, a Palos Heights resident who is studying management information systems at Bradley University, recently participated in an advanced ethical hacking course where she was able to sneak her way into a restricted area with full access to sensitive data.

Playing the role of a distressed young person, Lennon was able to win the empathy of a kindhearted custodian and gain unchecked access.

“We had a run of the human resources office, where so much personal data is stored,” she said. “We even accessed the C suites.”

Lennon and fellow students in the class had free rein to seek and exploit security vulnerabilities as part of learning good defense in stopping hackers from the perspective of playing the villain, so to speak.

Regardless, the orthodox approach to teaching and learning, seemingly won over the Stagg High School graduate.

“It’s an extremely unique experience to be able to legally perform physical and network penetration tests,” she said. “The class was a lot of work, but it was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had at Bradley.”

Rich Township’s poms squad rolls over adversity

The Rich Township High School District 227 varsity poms squad is collecting first place trophies despite the challenges of being busy student-athletes.

While the squad boasts more than 20 student-athletes during basketball season, the competition teams consists of just a half dozen of them while battling Class 3A teams.

“We are competing against teams that have students who belong to award-winning dance studios outside of their schools and outside assistance,” said coach Ronette Lusby-Brown. “Before the merger of our three high schools our team was only competing with the 1A division. We truly are the underdogs this year.”

The team recently won first place at the Fieldcrest Dance Invite, its second top finish this season.
