Investigators were working to determine what caused a fire in a multiunit residential structure in Evanston on Friday night that displaced four people and required firefighters to rescue two cats.
At approximately 8:20 p.m. Friday, Evanston firefighters responded to the 1400 block of Madison Street for a report of a multi-residential structure fire, according to a news release. The first arriving companies responded within minutes and encountered heavy smoke and fire engulfing two floors in the rear of the structure.
“Due to an aggressive fire attack, the fire was extinguished within 20 minutes, with minimal fire extension noted,” according to the release.
Four occupants evacuated the structure, and during search efforts firefighters removed two cats from the building.

The American Red Cross provided emergency services for displaced residents and there were not any civilian or firefighter injuries reported.
Additional equipment and personnel from neighboring municipalities provided Evanston station coverage and assisted Evanston Fire Department personnel battle the blaze.
