An Oswego man has been charged with reckless homicide in connection with a vehicle crash in the village last summer that killed a pedestrian.

Jaylin Buckner, 19, of the 600 block of Otter Way, faces felony charges after a five-month investigation by Oswego police, with the assistance of Aurora police, using forensic analysis on electronic devices, including the vehicle’s event data recorder and Buckner’s cellphone, Oswego police announced Saturday in a news release.

Antonio J. Villarreal, 32, of Oswego, was walking around 6:40 a.m. July 1 when according to Oswego police he attempted to cross Mill Road at Washington Street to Lynx Lane and was struck by a Nissan Sentra driven by Buckner.

Villarreal was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Buckner was originally cited for failure to yield for a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Buckner is accused of traveling more than 20 miles per hour over the speed limit at the time of the crash. Using data points mapped along with a crash reconstruction map, police said they were also able to confirm cell phone usage of a social media app at the time of the crash.

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office Dec. 8 authorized two felony counts of reckless homicide and one felony count of aggravated unlawful use of an electronic communication device against Buckner. A Kendall County judge issued a warrant for Buckner’s arrest, and on Friday, Buckner turned himself in at the Oswego Police Department, according to the release.
