Speak Out is a reader-generated column of opinions. If you there’s something you’d like to comment on in Elgin or beyond, send an email to [email protected]. Please include “speak out” in the subject line.

Pot, meet kettle: House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s blames Joe Biden for the country’s failure to quell the pandemic? This baseless concoction is just as dishonest as the “big lie” being spewed to solidify the Republican ignorant as to being factual. Biden is not responsible for the vaccination resistance prorogated by much of the GOP.

Doing what others wouldn’t do: I agree Mr. Rittenhouse shouldn’t have been in Kenosha. But what should good citizens do when those responsible for protecting them and their possessions repeatedly fail to do so? How many looters, vandals and arsonists were arrested by police during the riot?

Two out of three: It’s nice to see that Kyle Rittenhouse has disassociated himself from QAnon as well as all those “Big Lie” advocates, but he’s yet to take a firm stand when it comes to the Ten Commandments, especially No. 5.

Hard to have pity: Donna Vickroy’s column had such a sad story about a man who almost died with COVID-19. Fortunately, he’s now at home. Much of my sympathy for him waned when I read he wasn’t vaccinated. He says he’ll get vaccinated now. Ya think?

Can’t pick and choose: Some Catholic clerics want to bar President Biden from taking Communion because he does not want to ban abortion, despite possible moral objections. Do they also refuse Communion to Catholics who don’t believe divorce should be illegal? Why not take a stand against racism by denying Communion to white supremacists? We live in a pluralistic nation where our religion may guide our conscience and convictions but whose tenants should not be law. Otherwise, we live in a theocracy, not a democracy.

Not God’s job to stop shootings: The Speak Out comment about God not stopping the shootings in Charleston are ridiculous. Don’t blame God for the free will of man. God didn’t shoot anyone. God doesn’t commit crimes. Earth is flawed. There is good and evil. God’s son died so we could have utopia in the next life not on earth.

Do we even need a trial? I’d call that jerk who drove through those people in Wisconsin an animal, but I don’t want to disrespect animals. Now you know why we need the death penalty. We have it on video. He’s driving. The defense rests. The prosecution rests. He’s guilty. Hang him.
