A 3-year-old boy died late Tuesday after a fall from the 17th floor of a residential building on the Near North Side, officials said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the boy as Lamar Roach Jr., of the 1800 block South Normal Avenue in the city’s East Pilsen neighborhood. The medical examiner’s office said an autopsy will be conducted Thursday.

About 10:40 p.m. Lamar, who may have pushed out a window screen, fell and landed in bushes outside the building in the 1100 block of North LaSalle Drive, Chicago police said in a media notification.

Lamar was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The death is being investigated by detectives as accidental.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is also investigating after his death, spokesman Bill McCaffrey said. The department had not had contact with the boy’s family prior to the investigation, McCaffrey confirmed.

“1120 N. Lasalle is currently in compliance with our exterior wall ordinance requirements as ownership submitted the required report on 03/19/21,” Department of Buildings spokesman Victor Owoeye wrote in an email. “In that report, the owner’s structural engineer certified that the exterior wall and windows were in a safe condition.”

An inspector was assigned to look at the building, Owoeye said.
