Oswego-based School District 308 is looking at adding new high school courses including theater directing and cybersecurity classes in the 2022-23 academic year.
District 308 Executive Director of Accountability and High School Education Heather Kincaid presented a proposal for the new courses to the School Board recently.
The focus of the proposed classes is on the completion of a sequence of courses taken in a student’s four-year high school career, Kincaid said.
Theatre Directing I and II would be semester courses taken after a sequence of acting and technical courses, she said.
The Fine Arts Department is recommending the high school eliminate Theatre Foundations so there are three distinct pathways for students going through the sequence of courses plus an opportunity for students to participate in an internship and directed study in their senior year, she said.
Theatre Foundations was a study of a blend of disciplines, she said.
“All of these courses are a semester long,” Kincaid said of the proposed theater directing classes.
Another proposal is for a junior/senior Kinetic Wellness elective called Advanced Dance II.
Also being proposed is a year-long cybersecurity course for juniors and seniors interested in computer programming and computer science.
The fourth proposal is to add Calculus III for accelerated math students. It would be a dual course through Waubonsee Community College, Kincaid said.
The proposed high school courses will be presented to the School Board for a vote Nov. 15.
