Northbrook District 28’s Board of Education indicated it would support Northbrook’s plan targeting climate change, though there’s little sign of further action on the board’s part at this time.
Board members voted near-unanimously to support the village’s Climate Action Plan, with one board member, Shweta Jinkala, absent from the meeting. The village adopted the expansive, 134-page plan in August.
Per the plan, the village plans to reduce emissions by 35 % by 2040 and 80 % by 2080. Northbrook has touted the plan as one of the first in the Chicagoland; only Highland Park, Evanston, and Chicago itself have climate action plans, according to a 2021 report by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus.
School officials from Glenbrook High School District 225, Northbrook/Glenview School District 30 and Northfield School District 31 contributed to the climate action plan.
The plan does not include specific mandates for District 28, though secretary Larry Hewitt indicated the board would continue to study the plan “and see what other areas we can support as we move forward.”
Hewitt did indicate District 28 planned to take action on one part of the village’s plan: purchasing a battery-powered snowblower to see how it held up against the gas mowers.
