Mundelein trustees said goodbye Monday to a Planning and Zoning commissioner who is retiring from the role and thanked her for her service, which included working on more than 100 zoning cases.

Sophia Schneckloth had been a member of the Mundelein Planning and Zoning Commission since 2015. Her retirement was effective Oct. 6, officials said. At the Village Board meeting Monday, Mayor Steve Lentz read a proclamation that detailed some of her time on the commission.

“The Mundelein community has been enriched by Sophia’s many years of dedicated service and her contributions shall have a lasting impact for decades to come,” the proclamation states.

During her six-year tenure, Schneckloth participated in hearing 121 zoning cases, Lentz said. Some of those cases have included the Downtown North Implementation Plan, the comprehensive plan update in 2020, the Maple Hill subdivision, recreational cannabis, solar energy zoning, the Sheldon Woods Subdivision and the project for Transitional Care of Lake County, according to the proclamation.

Schneckloth, along with her husband, were at the meeting and she thanked the board.

Also at the meeting, trustees approved the purchase of a few vehicles and agreed to join a program cloth and textiles recycling program with the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County.

The three vehicles will cost a little less than $226,000. The purchase includes a 1-ton dump truck, which is the most expensive of the three vehicles at about $116,000, and a police vehicle.

The SWALCO program participation approved is aimed at collecting clothing and textiles for recycling and reuse.

Nearly 85% of those kinds of items end up in landfills, according to village documents. Adam Boeche, director of Public Works and Engineering, said the village will be responsible for finding places to put donation boxes, and the program will not have a financial impact on the village.

“We’re hoping it’s a pretty productive and community-based program,” Boeche said.
