An 18-year-old East Dundee man has been found guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of a Carpentersville man in June 2020.

Devon C. Coleman, of the 600 block of Riverhaven Drive, faces a minimum 20-year prison term when sentenced by Kane County Judge John A. Barsanti, who convicted him in the death of Jordan Durr, 27, following a bench trial, a Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office news release said.

Prosecutors said Coleman and two other men drove from Maywood to Carpentersville to illegally purchase a handgun and met with Durr about 9 p.m. While Durr was leaning into their car to speak with the men at 9 Oxford Drive, there was an altercation and one of the three shot him in the left side of his chest, the release said.

Durr ran a short distance before collapsing. He was pronounced dead a short time later at a local hospital, the release said.

The three suspects were arrested shortly after the shooting by Carpentersville police. The murder weapon was a stolen 9mm handgun, prosecutors said.

At they time of their arrest, the state’s attorney’s office said the three men allegedly went through Durr’s clothing in an attempt to steal his possessions. All three were charged with attempted armed robbery in addition to first-degree murder.

Joel V. Leitner, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Phillip Walker, of Carpentersville, are awaiting trial. They are being held in the Kane County jail.

Coleman also remains in the Kane County jail, where he has been held since his arrest. His next court appearance, at which he could be sentenced, is scheduled for Dec. 1, the release said.

“Every day we read that there are too many illegal guns in Illinois,” Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Cullen said in the release. “Devon Coleman did his best to exacerbate that problem. The bigger problem in Illinois is that we have too many criminals willing to use handguns to kill people. As a community, we are safer with Devon Coleman behind bars.”
