The Illinois Art Education Association has selected Oak Lawn Community High School teacher Jennifer Wargin as a 2021 Educator of Distinction.
The IAEA awards and scholarship committee cited Wargin’s professional performance, service and leadership in selecting her for the recognition.
“Jennifer is an outstanding teacher who cares deeply about not only the students at OLCHS, but all students and educators,” said OLCHS Principal Jeana Lietz. “She gives all that she has to help other find success in the arts and in education. We are extremely lucky to have her as an OLCHS staff member, and would be lost without her.”
Students from Arbury Hills School shine in coloring contest
Ember Chavez, Emily Claahsen, Jordan Landeverde and Delaney Grabarek, all students from Summit Hill School District 161’s Arbury Hills School in Mokena, earned ribbons and prizes in the Will County Fair Coloring Contest.
Chavez won first place for first grade and Claahsen took top honors among the third graders competition. Landeverde was second in second grade and Grabarek earned third place in first grade. All entries were displayed during the Fair’s five-day event in August.
University of Iowa College of Nursing Fall White Coats
Frankfort’s Catherine Miles, Orland Park’s Carly Hildebrand and Shannon Tripp and Palos Park’s Margaret O’Leary were among the University of Iowa’s bachelor of science in nursing students who participated in the College of Nursing’s biannual white coat ceremony. The donning of the white coat symbolizes a nursing student’s transition to clinical nursing course work and live patient care.

When the 2021 University of Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band performs at the seven home games at historic Kinnick Stadium this fall, the Southland will be well represented with a half-dozen players as part of one of the top college marching bands in the nation.

New Lenox’s Hagen playing soccer at Whitewater
Miles Hagen, a native of New Lenox and graduate of Lincoln-Way West, will compete for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men’s soccer team during the 2021 season. Hagen is a freshman who is majoring in biology.
Tinley Park student in Alabama co-op program
Tinley Park’s Alexander Witkowski is participating in the University of Alabama’s Cooperative Education Program for Fall 2021. Witkowski is working for Michelin North America.
Oak Lawn’s Burke lands Wisconsin scholarship
Oak Lawn’s Jess Burke, a graduate of Mother McAuley High School, received the Out of State Scholarship from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for the 2021-22 academic year.
Homewood’s Palomo named resident assistant at Upper Iowa
Homewood resident Gabrielle Palomo has been named one of Upper Iowa University’s resident assistants for 2021-22. Palomo, who is a biology major, said she hopes to learn for this position to connect with fellow students “while spreading a message of integrating the importance of diversity and social differences between students.”
