player ready...Twenty years ago, on Sept. 11, 2001, our way of life was forever changed.
On that day, terrorists attacked the country using two airplanes to crash into the iconic twin towers of downtown Manhattan’s World Trade Center in New York City. A third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and a fourth plane bound for another target crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
To mark the 20th anniversary of the tragedy, the following events will be held in Lake County:
Antioch
A Day of Remembrance and Memorial Tree Planting Ceremony. Saturday, 11 a.m. -noon, 210 Oakwood Drive (Memorial Triangle). Sponsored by the village of Antioch, along with the Oakwood Knolls Property Owners Association.
Arlington Heights
The DelBoccio|Marchetti Group will host a softball tournament to honor police and fire departments, and pay tribute on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Hasbrook Park, 333 W. Maude Ave.
Games will start following a moment of silence to remember those lost. They’ll feature Mount Prospect police and firefighters, Arlington Heights police and firefighters Local 3105. Families can enjoy a morning at the park with a face painter, raffles and several area food trucks.
Barrington
The village of Barrington commemorates the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with a solemn ceremony Saturday at 10 a.m., Memorial Park, 610 Dundee Ave., Barrington.
Also, the New York-based and internationally acclaimed American String Quartet returns to Barrington’s White House to mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with a program featuring Robert Sirota’s Triptych (written to commemorate 9/11 victims), Dvorák’s famed American Quartet (String Quartet No. 12 in F Major, Op. 96), George Walker’s Lyric for Strings, and Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings. Saturday, 7:30- 9 p.m., 145 W Main St., Barrington.
Patrons will enjoy an up-close and personal performance, as well as the ability to speak with the musicians following the concert. All ticket purchases include a complimentary glass of champagne prior to the concert. Price is $40.
Another event will be the Men’s Breakfast Memorial Ride, Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Willow Creek Community Church, 67 Algonquin Road, South Barrington.
HighRoad Riders host the memorial ride, starting in Willow Creek parking Lot E. The event will include a brief devotion, ride to Rockford for breakfast at the Stockholm Inn and visits to the 9/11 Emergency Responders Memorial and the Heroes of Freedom Memorial in Wauconda.
The ride ends at the Algonquin Lake in the Hills Firefighters Memorial. Total distance will be 150 miles.
Grayslake
The Green Room Theatre Company at Grayslake North High School will present a 9/11 20-Year Memorial Show to educate the audience about what happened that day, honor the heroes, and look forward in hope. Saturday, 7:00 to 10:15 p.m., Grayslake North High School, 1925 North Route 83.
Highland Park
The- city of Highland Park, in partnership with the city of Highwood, the Highland Park Public Library, North Shore School District 112, the Park District of Highland Park, and Township High School District 113 — Highland Park High School, will mark the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks with a solemn ceremony of remembrance. Saturday, 9 a.m. at Fire Station #33, 1130 Central Ave.
Although the event will be held in a well-ventilated indoor/outdoor space, consistent with guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health, all attendees are encouraged to wear face coverings at all times. For those who prefer to attend virtually, the event will be livestreamed on the city’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
Lake Villa
The Lake Villa District Library will host “September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed the World,” an educational exhibition from the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.
The 14-panel poster display includes personal stories of those who witnessed and survived the attacks, as well as archival photographs and images of artifacts from the museum’s permanent collection. The exhibit presents the history of 9/11, its origins, and ongoing implications, and encourages critical thinking about the legacies of the attacks.
Self-guided tours of the exhibit are available during the library’s normal business hours throughout the month of September, along with a number of family-friendly activities that address themes of courage, compassion, resilience and hope.

Lake Zurich
The Lake Zurich Fire Department honors the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and kicks off the inaugural free Kids’ Health and Safety Fair. Saturday, 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m., at the Foglia YMCA in Lake Zurich.

Libertyville
A memorial begins with a silent parade from the Metra train station south on Milwaukee Avenue to the park.
Mayor Donna Johnson will make welcoming remarks. The keynote speaker will be Capt. Jason Williamson, commanding officer, Naval Station Great Lakes. The event includes a bell ceremony for victims, a rendition of “Amazing Grace,” and pipes and drums from The Midlothian Pipe Band. There will be a banner with the victims’ names. Saturday, 10 a.m. at Cook Park, Milwaukee Avenue and Cook Avenue in downtown Libertyville.
Lincolnshire
A 9/11 remembrance ceremony, Saturday, 10 a.m. at Adlai E. Stevenson High School, One Stevenson Drive (Route 22 just west of Route 45).
The guest speaker will be Scott Schrimpe, a retired New York firefighter and north tower survivor. A Stevenson High School Patriot Day/Family Fest follows from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Local police and fire departments, first responders and the U.S. military will participate. A climbing wall, games, a military vehicle and more will be part of the event.
Long Grove
The village of Long Grove, in partnership with the Long Grove Fire Protection District, will hold a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony. Saturday, 8 a.m., in the parking lot at the fire station, 1165 Old McHenry Road.
Mundelein
Commemoration of 20th Anniversary of 9/11 and the Mundelein Arts festival 10-year Anniversary ribbon-cutting combined events. Saturday, 10 a.m.
Wauconda
9/11 Remembrance Ceremony. Saturday, 9:30 to 10 a.m., at the Memorial near the Wauconda Police Station, 311 S. Main St.
Waukegan
9/11 20th Anniversary Remembrance. Join the Waukegan Fire Department in the 20th anniversary remembrance of 9/11. Saturday, 9:00-10:00 a.m., at Fireman’s Memorial Park, 2115 Dover Road.
Wheeling
Wheeling Helping Hands sponsors the event to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Saturday, 1 p.m. There will be music from Time Machine immediately after the ceremony. Brat Fest and Bags Tournament: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. AMVETS Post 66, 700 McHenry Road.
Registrations will be taken the day of the tournament from 11 a.m. to noon. The entry fee is $50 per team. Proceeds from food carry-outs and a split-the-pot raffle benefit will support the Wheeling Police and Fire Department charitable activities.
