The Yorkville City Council has created a new liquor license class for gift basket sales.
The city had eliminated a gift basket liquor license classification during a review of the city’s liquor code last year due to a lack of interest, city officials said.
“At that time, staff proposed eliminating the gift basket liquor license due to not receiving any applications since its creation in 2006,” Deputy Clerk Jori Behland said in a report to City Council members.
Staff recently received a request from a business with plans to open in a storefront in the 1400 block of Cannonball Trail. The business owner wants to sell gift baskets with the option to have beer, wine and liquor as part of the baskets. Staff recommended adding a new liquor license class to allow the sale of gift baskets with alcohol, Behland said.
The city’s original gift basket liquor license classification was for wine, beer and champagne.
“The only change from the 2006 license classification is that the business owner requested to have the option to include liquor. Staff has discussed and agreed upon adding liquor to the classification,” she said.
The City Council approved the new liquor license classification.
The liquor offered for sale cannot be displayed separately from the gift package or gift basket and cannot be sold separately or delivered separately from the other items, city officials said. The alcohol can only be consumed off premises, according to the ordinance.

The license can only be issued to applicants who can demonstrate that they are operating a gift basket business. The annual fee for the gift basket sales license is $250, according to the city.
