Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Occasionally, Stephen A. Smith’s targets are getting exactly what they deserve, exactly how they deserve it. Smith got in that rare zone Tuesday morning, with a rant so good that by the end he was cutting himself off to say “You know I’m on point with this!”

After some characteristically unnecessary bluster — calling for Roger Goodell to circumvent the NFL players’ union and ban unvaccinated players — Smith coolly pointed out that even as the COVID vaccines don’t eliminate infections entirely, they reduce hospitalizations to next to nothing. Then he got to his real muse: The people, including athletes, who think that they’re somehow scientists capable of researching what goes into vaccines.

“If I hear one person talk to me with ‘W-w-w-w-what’s in the vaccine,’ I swear, I might slap them with my phone. I can’t take it. Here’s the reason why, guys. Oh, so the flu shot, chicken pox, all these shots you’ve been taking all of these years. Excuse me, people take supplements and vitamins. Oh, now what we’re trying to say — we’re trying to front. ‘What we do is, we look at the bottle, we dissect every ingredient in the supplement, in the vitamin, and then we Google it, and we look it up'” Smith said mockingly.

“You’re a damn liar. These people! We go to the doctor, we feeling sick, the doctor prescribes the medicine, we go to the CVS, Rite-Aid, we pick it up and we take the medicine.”

“Why all of a sudden are we acting like we’re dissecting and picking apart one ingredient after another? It’s the biggest damn lie imaginable, and they’re full of it.”

Curiously, ESPN has barely promoted the clip at all, and Smith only posted the first part of the rant about punishing unvaccinated players. NFL players are largely vaccinated, but a small minority

of less than 10% have held out.
