Speak Out is a reader-generated column of opinions. If you see something you disagree with or think is incorrect, send an email to [email protected]. Please include “speak out” in the subject line.

‘Jeopardy’ host fiasco: Is anyone else sick of the drama surrounding the replacement host of “Jeopardy”? And why did Sony have to make it a popularity contest? Alex Trebek was a “pro” until the end and, I’m sure, is looking down at this fiasco and just rolling his eyes and shaking his head.

Highway robbery taxes: I just opened up my second half of the 2020 Cook County property tax bill and lo and behold, I find the usual Democratic inflationary sticker shock increase is 31%. Really, with COVID-19, business restrictions and income cuts, urban violence and schools depriving kids of in-person learning, this is what we get in return? This is outright highway robbery.

Dumb LaRussa move: The damage that Tony LaRussa did by pulling (pitcher Craig) Kimbrel (from the Aug. 20 White Sox game) has caused major player/coach relationships. The damage is done. Kimbrel’s performance was terrible in his next game. Tony, you spilled a drink on your uniform.

Mitigate the mitigation: It’s impossible for Gov. Pritzker to state a sentence without the word mitigation, his favorite word.

Pritzker’s TV grandstanding: TV stations do not need to interrupt programming every time Gov. Pritzker makes an announcement. Many of his interruptions can wait until the scheduled newscasts later. He issues press releases days in advance so we already know what he will say. He just wants to grandstand as a braggart for a photo-op for free TV time!

Rights not free: Saw people on the news protesting masks. You have the freedom to do so because of all the people who have sacrificed over the years so you have that right. Now you are so selfish you can’t even think of the rights of others. Me first, me only! It is time to use your given freedoms to do something for others as those who before you did for you. A mask won’t kill you, but not wearing one may kill others.

Just follow the rules: I want to compliment Paul Krugman on writing the best column I have seen on the pandemic and the people who are not getting vaccinated or wearing masks. Krugman points out that this is not a personal choice, this is a democracy where we do things for the people, for the majority, not individuals who are so proud of their freedom. It’s not anarchy buddies, so get over it and follow the directions of these governments.

A place worse than Chicago: Way to go, President Biden. You finally got Chicago off the top murder list of cities in the world. Taking it’s place: Kabul. Nice going.
