Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

For people with autism or sensory processing disorders, going anywhere new can be challenging. Children especially need to know what to expect to have a successful outing, and prep work for family members ahead of time can be stressful and time consuming.

In January 2020, Naperville Public Library launched the Sensory NPL app to help customers plan their trips to the library and engage with library resources. With the help of this new app, readers and caregivers alike can communicate in new ways during their visit.

There’s plenty of ways to use the Sensory NPL app to make each library experience the very best it can be. This includes creating customized schedules, exploring sensory friendly maps and getting tips on ways to improve your library experience.

After choosing one of the three library locations, users can watch video guides and see building maps that are specific to Nichols Library, Naper Blvd. Library or 95th Street Library.

The app, available on both Android and iPhone, is designed to help readers relax, enjoy and engage with the library in ways that best suit their needs.

Despite its debut during the pandemic, consumers are seeing great value in using the Sensory NPL app. As one user wrote, “(I) love that our library in Naperville has resources to support all types of readers and learners.”

Read on for a few ways the Sensory NPL app can help you plan for your next trip to the library.

Explore with guides

Prepare for an upcoming visit by reading about what you can do and see to know what to expect before arrival. Talking about what to expect helps to ease anxiety around trying something new.

Create a schedule

Make a personalized plan for your visit. Add your own pictures, and check things off the schedule as tasks are completed. This may include looking for books, playing a game or using the restroom.

Tap to communicate

The app provides images that customers can use to express needs and wants, such as “I need a break” or “It is too loud!” Caregivers can also use these tools to provide reminders while at the library, like being quiet or staying together.

Play a game

Take a break with an interactive game. Users can play a card matching game, complete with images from the library, before, during or after their visit.

Check out maps, tips and more

Find everything needed to make your next trip to the library safe and enjoyable for all. Check out the sensory map, read insider tips, create a customizable profile and more!
