Dear Dr. June:
I love my career and I love my family. My career makes it hard sometimes with my family because I don’t always work traditional hours. Sometimes I work late, and sometimes I have to do things on a weekend day. I never work both weekend days. It helps me feel less guilty with time away from my husband and children. My question is, how do you balance family life and a career? — Kid Guilty in South Florida
Dear Kid Guilty:
You can start by letting go of the guilt. You have a career, which is a part of many people’s lives to help support their family. If you didn’t have a job or a career, then you’d feel guilty about that, with concerns you can’t provide for your family. You already have love, so just replace guilt with feeling caring.
Does your husband work? He probably does some nontraditional hours as well. I can pretty much guarantee that no one is asking him about balancing family and his career. That’s another reason not to feel uncomfortable about your choices.
The truth is that balancing family and career doesn’t really happen. You focus on one part a bit more, and then the other part gets a little less. Show your children love when you see them, which includes discipline. Don’t let guilt stop you from helping them make good decisions. Make special dates with them on your time off and give your husband a few unexpected hugs and kisses.
Speaking of your husband, there is nothing wrong with getting him involved in helping around the house or assisting more with the children. The bottom line is to do what you can, when you can. There is no 50/50, and you will run yourself ragged trying to make that happen. Sometimes it’s 70/30 or even 80/20 on certain days. Guess what? It still equals 100, and there is your balance.
