Visitation will be held Sunday for 67-year-old Denise Huguelet, of Orland Park, a retired special education teacher shot and killed Tuesday on the Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago while returning home from a White Sox game.

Visitation will take place from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Robert J. Sheehy & Sons Funeral Home, 9000 W. 151st St., Orland Park.

Her funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Francis of Assisi, 15050 Wolf Road, Orland Park.

Huguelet worked for 24 years as a special education teacher at Central Middle School in Evergreen Park, serving students with the most significant disabilities, Evergreen Park Elementary District 124 said in a Facebook post Wednesday.

“Her passion for students and her dedication to the community showed in all aspects of her work,” the school said.

Huguelet’s survivors include her husband, Michael, who formerly worked as village prosecutor for Orland Park, as well as two sons, two daughters and 11 grandchildren, according to the obituary posted at Sheehy & Sons’ website.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to the Mulliganeers, a nonprofit in Downers Grove, or Misericordia Home in Chicago.

The Mulliganeers is an organization “dedicated to raising the trajectory of needy people’s lives throughout the Chicago area, especially when children are involved,” according to its website.

Huguelet and her husband were at an annual outing to the Sox game organized by the Mulliganeers, according to Bob Sheehy, one of the founders who said that couple has been part of the group for some 25 years.

“All of us at the Mulliganeers are brokenhearted about this tragedy,” he said Friday.

State police said a trooper in the area heard the gunshots on the Dan Ryan near 63rd Street about 10 p.m. Tuesday, and state police air personnel responded. During an aerial search, troopers saw a car speeding away from the area.

State troopers followed the car and took two people into custody, but they were later released without charges.

State police are asking that anyone with information contact them at 847-294-4400 or by email at [email protected].
