A helicopter crashed in Prospect Heights Wednesday morning, according to police and the Federal Aviation Administration.
The helicopter crashed onto Milwaukee Avenue near Apple Drive, between South River Road and East Palatine Road about 6:40 a.m., according to preliminary information.
The pilot was taken to Glenbrook Hospital with “minor injuries,” according to a statement from Prospect Heights police Chief Jim Zawlocki, and he was expected to survive.
Zawlocki said the helicopter was located on its side in the northbound lanes of Milwaukee Avenue.
An FAA spokesperson said the pilot had been the only person in the helicopter when it departed Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling.
“A Robinson R44 helicopter with only the pilot aboard crashed about a mile south of Chicago Executive Airport at 6:40 a.m. local time on Wednesday. It came to rest on Milwaukee Avenue,” FAA spokesperson Elizabeth Isham Cory wrote in an email.
Milwaukee Avenue was closed for the crash investigation, not far from the airport.
A statement issued on behalf of Chicago Executive Airport said the airport was briefly closed but normal operations resumed a short time later.
The Prospect Heights Fire Protection District and the Wheeling Fire Department also responded, the statement said.
