The fate of the Montgomery dam, a favorite of fishing enthusiasts and eagle watchers, will be the subject of a study by the State of Illinois.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is undertaking a study to see if the dam should be modified or removed from the Fox River. The agency is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the dam, which is located in downtown Montgomery. It has requested a memorandum of understanding with the Village of Montgomery that would allow the village to work with the state on what is best for the dam and the river.

“The state is looking to modify or remove the dam to enhance water quality in the rivers in the state,” Peter Wallers, the Village of Montgomery Engineer said.

The village is looking at alternative sources for drinking water in the future, and the Fox River is one alternative.
Village President Matt Brolley said the state has the money to remove the dam.
Trustee Steve Jungermann asked, “If the village goes to the Fox as a primary water source, what does the dam do?” Wallers said the study needs to be completed before the costs will be known.
The Friends of the Fox River, a conservation group, is also promoting the modification or removal of the dam. They cite improvements to the fish habitats as a goal of the group.
The Village Board unanimously approved the resolution supporting the study.
