Chicago Cubs shortstop Javier Báez has a bruised left heel and was not in the lineup Monday night for their series opener against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field.
Báez suffered the injury after going down past first base during the eighth inning Sunday while trying to leg out an infield hit against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He stayed in for the ninth, but manager David Ross said Báez woke up “pretty sore” Monday. Báez is considered day to day.
Jake Arrieta (right hamstring tightness) and Rowan Wick (left oblique strain) threw live batting practice Monday afternoon at Wrigley. Ross estimated Arrieta went 73-75 pitches during his session and thought he looked pretty good. Arrieta will throw a bullpen in a couple of days, after which the Cubs will assess where to go from there, Ross said.
“Looked like (Arrieta) got some really bad swings,” Ross said. “Command is still a little bit off, I thought, in the first couple, but he locked it in a little bit later, get back over to that glove side.”
Wick threw 25 pitches and will head to Triple-A Iowa to continue his rehab assignment.
