Elgin man gets 25 years for child sexual assault

An Elgin man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for sexually abusing and assaulting two children.

José L. Dominguez, 55, of the first block of Pioneer Park Place, pleaded guilty to one count each of felony predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and aggravated criminal sexual abuse in exchange for the prison term in a plea deal approved by Kane County Judge Alice Tracy.

Prosecutors said Dominguez sexually abused two victims between January 2011 and August 2018, knowing both were younger than 13.

Dominguez must serve at least 85% of the 22-year sentence received for the predatory sexual assault charge and is eligible for day-for-day sentencing on the 3-year sentence for sexual abuse, a Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office news release said.

He will receive credit for 979 days served in the Kane County jail, where he had been held on $1 million bail since being arrested, the release said.

In addition to the prison term, he must register for life as a sexual offender per state law.

South Elgin woman a referee at Tokyo Olympics

Corinne Grotenhuis, a South Elgin resident and 10-time world champion weightlifter, is serving as a referee for the men’s and women’s weightlifting competitions at the Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo.

Grotenhuis, 55, injured her knee in 2000, making it impossible for her to compete in the Olympics that year, which was the first in which weightlifting became an Olympic sport. Three years later, she needed knee surgery, again preventing her from qualifying for the games.

“My journey has been quite long to get to this point,” she said. “I’m very excited, and I can’t wait!”

Grotenhuis is 30-year social worker currently employed at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. She has worked in the hospital’s emergency department for nine years.
