Dear Dr. June:
I feel like I’m somewhat familiar with relationships but not sure how I feel about them. I had a bad breakup a few years ago, and I still see myself distancing from anything that looks like a relationship. I’ve had some nice friends and nice dates, but I’m a little wary of commitment. My daughter and my friends tease me that I’m not getting any younger, since I’m approaching 40 and would like companionship. Actually, I met someone I’ve been seeing for a few months, but I haven’t fully committed yet. What’s wrong with being careful? It’s like I said: I know relationships, but I’m just not very good at them. Am I being too cautious? — Forty and Free in Florida
Dear F&F:
I’m sorry your previous romance did not have the fairy-tale ending we all hope for, but that’s why they call them fairy tales. Knowing relationships would mean that you would know this.
Sure, we all want that fairy tale. But as adults, we realize that not everything in our relationships and life works out as we had hoped. Isn’t this what you tell your daughter: “It’s OK, things will get better”? Would you want her to just throw in the towel? I doubt that you would, because you haven’t stopped moving forward because of what has happened behind you. In fact, that’s even more reason to move forward — to get away from the unpleasant past.

With that said, yes, you should be careful. However, if you do want companionship and you met someone who is good to you, then it’s time to put one foot in front of the other. Walk away from the past into your future. This can only improve other areas of your life as well, removing that stress of unhappiness.
Now, there is no guarantee your current friend is the one and only. There is a guarantee that you won’t find out if you don’t take a chance and move forward. Give him, but more importantly, give yourself a chance to explore new possibilities.
