Looking for a selfie with a stormtrooper? Wanna hobnob with an Imperial officer?

Tinley Park will debut its Star Wars Celebration at 7:30 p.m. July 22, featuring games, activities, costumed characters and a screening under the stars of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

“This special event replaces the Christmas in July event held for several years,” said Carol Bradtke of the Tinley Park Park District. “We wanted to add a fun, family action movie, and ‘Star Wars’ sci-fi always delivers.”

For some fans of the Force, this galactic event may still seem like Christmas in July, given the theme of the festivities, which kick off at 7:30 p.m.

“We don’t want to spoil the fun, but rest assured kids will have a blast with a variety of out-of-this world games,” Bradtke said.

Guests also can mingle with stormtroopers, clone pilots or maybe even a Sith lord.

“Costumed characters from the 501st (Legion) Midwest Garrison will be in attendance for meet-and-greet and photo opportunities,” Bradtke said. “Dressing up in ‘Star Wars’ costumes or ‘Star Wars’ T-shirts definitely adds to the fun for everyone and makes those photo ops really pop.”

An outdoor screening of 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” begins at dusk, around 8:30 p.m.

“Providing free movies for the entire family fits all of (the park district’s) goals perfectly,” Bradtke said. “Thursdays in the Park offer the community a safe and fun environment. The addition of special events adds an element of excitement for the kids to meet their favorite character and win prizes at the games.”

As part of the park district’s summer Thursdays in the Park concert and movies series, the Star Wars Celebration likewise will take place at The Band Shell, 8125 W. 171st St, on the east side of the Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center.

“The location of The Band Shell at our premier facility makes it easy for anyone to attend,” Bradtke said. “Many people walk or ride their bicycles as well as coming by car. Being in the open grassy area allows children to play freely.”

In lieu of a nearby cantina, light concessions, such as water and candy, will be available on-site for purchase.

“Attendees need to bring their own lawn chairs and or blankets; mosquito spray is suggested,” Bradtke said. “These are family events: Pets and alcohol are discouraged.”

Depending of the weather, of course, the Thursday evening series usually attracts between 150 and 250 people.

“In the event of excessive heat or rainy conditions, we will move the event into our recreation center gym,” she said. “If that decision is made, the information will be posted on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages as well as our website.”
