A man died Tuesday at a hospital after he was pulled out of the North Shore Channel on Chicago’s Northwest Side, officials said.

The Chicago Fire Department responded to a report of a man in the channel near Bryn Mawr and Kedzie avenues Tuesday afternoon, said Walter Schroeder, a Chicago fire district chief. The man was identified as Luis Avilez, of the 5600 block of North St. Louis Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Police said crews were called to the scene about 5:10 p.m.

Divers pulled the 60-year-old out of the channel and transported him to Swedish Hospital, initially in serious condition, Schroeder said.

The man was later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Family members told WGN-TV that Avilez had been canoeing with his wife when he fell into the water.
