. Please include “speak out” in the subject line.Hard to watch: I don’t know what was more offensive, watching those images of convicted sex offender Bill Cosby being set free from prison or the smiling faces of all those smiling female supporters who displayed such wonton disregard for the pain and suffering of his many victims.
Pay your own way: A Black female Olympian at the U.S. Olympic trials turned her back toward the American flag during playing of the national anthem at the medal ceremony. That is her right. However, if you want to participate in the Olympics and you want to turn your back on the United States flag, then pay your own freight. You can’t turn your back to the flag while sticking out your hand for taxpayer dollars or whatever funding source is paying your way. You can’t have it both ways.
Dangerous beliefs: Far right religious extremists are the most dangerous. They are truly domestic terrorists. They represent the greatest internal threat to our democracy. From voter suppression to lies and conspiracy theories, calling them patriots is an oxymoron. Civil rights and equality are anathema to them. They deplore diversity. They want a God-fearing, Bible-believing nation, run by Christians, and nothing less will suffice, no matter what they have to do to accomplish that goal.
Better is debatable: I’m tired of hearing Mayor Lightfoot and police Chief Brown talk about improving crime statistics. It’s like a serial killer saying he’s doing better because he only killed eight people this year versus 10 last year.
Just enjoy the holiday: I don’t think that many people would watch broadcasts of old footage of fireworks shows instead of the real thing, as one comment in Speak Out suggested. It sounds just as bad as watching old Jerry Lewis telethons. After such an awful year last year, I think that people ought to enjoy themselves and celebrate the holiday.
Display flags proudly: Happy Independence Day to all American citizens. The Fourth of July is always a special day in our country. Wouldn’t it be nice to see all blocks and homes and buildings in our neighborhoods draped with Old Glory, the Stars and Stripes flowing in red, white and blue in appreciation of our founding and blessings from our creator. With all the craziness that has occurred here the past few years, it would sure be nice to witness just for one day a display of respect and love of country.
