GOP efforts to control women’s bodies threaten our freedoms
Ross Douthat’s Opinion piece on “Bishops, Biden and brave new world” gets just about everything wrong. The threat of totalitarian-style government control comes not from Democrats’ attempts to ensure women the right to choose, but Republicans’ efforts to control their bodies.
From what girls can learn about sex in school; to how they can access birth control; to when they can, should or must bear children; Republicans seem to think Big Brother knows best.
Douthat’s assertion that Democrats are responsible for tens of millions of abortions is particularly odious. Study after study has proven that the best means of reducing abortions is to provide girls with open and honest sex education, and women with access to birth control options they can choose from to suit their needs.
Ignorance and misinformation, like “abstinence only” campaigns, cause abortions. Limiting and restricting access to reproductive services causes abortions. And Republican efforts to control women’s bodies are what threaten our freedoms.
