The Village Board has been meeting over video since the start of the novel coronavirus last year – when the governor issued a stay-at-home order. But, for the first time in a year, the July meeting, for instance, will be in person.
Village business was carried out at the June 21 virtual meeting, with trustees approving the Alpine Carnival taking place July 23 and July 24. This year’s event will be somewhat scaled back from earlier iterations, and even the name was changed from “Alpine Fest” to carnival.
Trustee Greg Weider noted at the meeting that the Lions Club-sponsored event will still limit certain activities.
“This year’s event will feature carnival rides, food vendors and midway games but have no parade, no beer tent and no water fights,” Weider said. “All carnival rides will be inspected and approved by the state of Illinois, and all food vendors are licensed and regulated through the Lake County Health Department.”
The event, as in years past, will be held on private property owned by the Lions Club. However, the club sought village approval to shut down Main Street for the duration of the event.
The village has traditionally done this to ensure public safety and this year no one on the board offered any objection.
“A significant amount of pedestrian traffic crosses the street during the event and youth are frequently along the roadway,” Weider said. “Village staff will send notification letters to Main Street businesses notifying them of the road closures.”
Mayor Tom Poynton was absent from the meeting and Trustee Jon Sprawka presided.
