Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Dear Dr. June,

My boyfriend is amazing! He is so cute and fun. The problem is that in this last year of COVID-19, he has not been as cute because of his beard. I understood because nobody was going to the barbershop to get a cut or shave. But when people started going to get a cut and shave, he still didn’t want to. He says he doesn’t think it’s so bad, but it’s not cute to me and I told him so. Then he cut it down a lot, but there’s still too much hair for me. I still love him, so I guess that beard is the compromise, but I don’t like. What can a girl do?

Dear Hair Problems,

What can a girl do when the man she loves will not shave his beard? Shave it for him? No, that won’t work, especially if you’re not a barber.

For many, the last year was a stressful period. Now, people are beginning to let their hair down, as the expression goes. Although he’s really letting his hair down, your boyfriend’s beard may be more of a symbol of letting go of the pandemic’s restrictions. Prior to COVID-19, many men were beginning to grow beards. It was a trend. Obviously, your boyfriend didn’t grow his beard until the last year, but he’s keeping it after realizing he likes it.

There is something particularly important I pointed out. Do you see it? It’s the word “trend.” That’s right, and trends come and go. He let his hair grow and wants to enjoy it for a while. So, let him enjoy the beard. My guess is that the beard is going to be temporary. He is aware you don’t like it and has already cut it shorter. A lot of the men who started the beard trend a couple of years of ago have already shaved it off. Your boyfriend will be on to something else before you know it.

Just a little FYI: There are much worse things he could have decided to do. Be glad it’s just a little extra hair.
