The Illinois Tollway plans to shut down westbound Joliet Road near Interstate 294 entirely for short periods of time beginning Monday night, to allow workers to remove bridge beams.
Three nights of closures will be needed to complete the project, which is part of the reconstruction of the I-294 bridge over Joliet Road in Indian Head Park.
Drivers heading west on Joliet from Wolf Road otherwise would connect with the Stevenson Expressway, Interstate 55.
Intermittent, full closures of Joliet, each lasting 15 minutes, are scheduled to take place between 9 p.m. June 21 and 5 a.m. Tuesday, June 22.
Eastbound Joliet Road from the Stevenson is already closed to traffic in this area and a detour is posted.
Throughout June, bridge work will continue at Joliet Road, as well as on I-294 bridges over Flagg Creek, I-55, and Wolf Road. Storm sewer and roadway work are also scheduled on Joliet Road and I-294.
Construction zone speed limits are in effect in all construction zones 24 hours a day. On Joliet Road, a 40 mph work zone speed limit is in effect. On I-294, a 45 mph work zone speed limit is in effect throughout the construction season.
Drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present.
The Tollway construction in the I-55 Interchange area this year is to accommodate the rebuilding and widening of I-294 between 75th Street and I-55. It includes reconstructing the ramp connecting I-55 to northbound I-294.
Farther north, the Plainfield Road Bridge over I-294 and the northbound ramp to the Hinsdale Oasis both will have to be reconstructed. Construction in this area is scheduled to be complete in 2025.
